The purpose of Level VI is to prepare officials to referee at National Championship finals and designated IIHF competition (i.e. Memorial Cup, Royal Bank Cup, Allan Cup, Hardy Cup, University Cup, CCAA finals, World Championships, Olympics, FISU Games). To become a Level VI, Saskatchewan Hockey Association Referee’s Division submits nominations to the Hockey Canada National Office, where they are reviewed by an established committee. The official will have been certified as a Level V official for one year. The Level VI camp is put on by Hockey Canada, and takes place in a location that is specified by Hockey Canada Level VI clinics are held based on national need for Level VIs. The Hockey Canada Manager, Officiating is responsible for the organization of the site and program, establishing criteria and review of the candidate’s qualifications. The camp is held for a minimum 4 days of instruction. The Level VI candidate must participate in all sessions of the clinic. The must attain a minimum of 90% on the “State Referee’s Decision Exam”. After the official passes the exam they must then pass a practical on-ice evaluation, performed by a national supervisor. The official must also complete a written assignment assigned by the Hockey Canada Referee-in-Chief.
